The Pickaxe/Axe icon allows you 

to gather Ore, Wood, and Herb in the field.

When you move near Ore/Wood/Herb, 

the corresponding icon will appear on your control panel. 

By clicking the icon, you can gather them.

You can also find Pet Eggs in the Premium Shop that 

assist with gathering Ore and Herbs.
